Dramatic improvement in science and maths in England

All praise to the youngsters, didn't they do well? And to the teachers and educationalists who must have put a lot into bringing this about.

Just thought a positive story, especially about England, youth, standards etc might be a good thing occasionally.

We could probably do better still if the 10 and 14 year old's were 10.99 and 14.99 years of age respectively when tested. 12 months would (presumably) make a big difference at that age.

Interesting article on Genius in the week recently. Almost all Canadian Ice Hockey players are born in first 3 months of year. As they are the biggest lads for 8/9/10 years old on 31st Dec. So they get all the coaching.

In effect it concludes that genius does not exist. You can be good : but it is the coaching you get and the times you live in that make the difference.

THis may just be terminology, but I would say that genius does exist, but is very very rare indeed. Talent is mostly nurture, and achievement is almost entirely training, effort, and fortune.

People born in August do less well in school than those born in other months, and do less well at sports. Which is hardly surprising as they are almost a year (6 months on average) younger than the rest of the class.

If all these 14 year olds are so good at Maths, could they be employed as bank managers? Or even, come to think of it, as chancellor?
