    Why do we not name things after former leaders.

    Was in Paris for a few days and noticed that De Gaulle has numerous things named after him including;

    Airport
    Metro Station
    Bridge
    Aircraft Carrier

    It got me thinking, what have we named after Churchill or other PMs? (no points for mentioning CUK posters or dogs that sell insurance)

    Presidents of France are Head of State. We name things after our Heads of State but not after our Heads of Government (except the odd pub).

      Because naming public landmarks after leaders stinks of both fascist corruption and socialist nepotism. Imagine "Tony's Dome" or "David's Shard"

      And nothing can top "Nelson's column".

          It gets too controversial and short lived.

          Cape Canaveral renamed Cape Kennedy and back again to Cape Canaveral. In Georgia, they named a road to the airport "George Bush II Boulevard" after getting a massive IMF loan that they now can’t pay back and people are unhappy at the name. In Iran, they renamed the street where the British Embassy is sited to Bobby Sands Street in order to dig at the Brits. Perhaps we should name something after Tony Blair, a public toilet perhaps.

            Didn't he get " Slimmer of the Year Award" from Weight Watchers in the 80's or something similar?

              Americans have a destroyer named after Churchill - does that count?

                Cape Canaveral is a slightly different proposition, though, since it was the whole geographic area which was renamed rather than just one building or even town. Since there was already a Cape Canaveral city, due south of the cape area, this was somewhat confusing.

                NASA retained the name for the Kennedy Space Center since that is a fitting tribute to the man who inspired the nation to put a man on the moon.
