Kindle publishing and US tax treatment - Anyone clued up?

It's all in the title. I have a few ideas but don't know if I want to get involved with US sales. It all depends on how much aggro there is involved. I remember a colleague once had to go through the hoops of obtaining an ITIN in order to be able to deal in the US and according to him that was an absolute nightmare, if I have to go that route I won't even bother with US sales.

Details of any experiences would be appreciated.
