    The annual SPOTY sweepstake

    Runners and riders

Cyclists Bradley Wiggins and Sir Chris Hoy, tennis star Andy Murray, and athletes Jessica Ennis and Mo Farah are candidates in a 12-strong list.

Rower Katherine Grainger, golfer Rory McIlroy, boxer Nicola Adams and sailor Ben Ainslie are other hopefuls.

Paralympians Sarah Storey, Ellie Simmonds and David Weir also make the list for the award on 16 December.
Wiggins - shoe in. Although cycling doesn't meet the 'skill + fitness = sport' criteria IMHO.

Good job you put an 'H' in there.

      Wiggins or Farah for me.

Tough year this year, after the tour de france I couldn't see anyone standing a chance against Wiggins, but what an amazing summer.

Great work by Murray and McIllroy this year also, just a shame for them on the timing IMHO.

Very tough in Olympic year! Ennis and Farah were probably the standouts of the Olympics publicity-wise and I can't see it going to a non-Olympian.

I'd say Farah because he also seemed a great guy, and personality/character is important. Or Wiggins.

It's nice to hear cycling isn't a hard/proper sport though!

Nicola Adams for me. Proper Yorkshire lass.

A para-olympian might nick it this year. There's some worthy candidates, the inevitable internet campaign might go for one of them, and the British public can get a bit doey-eyed.

But I'll be voting for one of the others on this occasion.

Hmm, good point. Simmonds has to be in with a shout in that case.

I'd like Ben to win but I can't see such a low-profile sport getting it.

I agree about Ben, but I'd probably go for Wiggy personally.

If I were picking a golfer for the short-list I'd have picked Poulter above McIlroy, for what he did in the Ryder Cup, which gave British people far more to cheer than the US PGA.

It must have been a tough list to pick and I can think of several multiple gold medallists who aren't on there.

I think Wiggo will win, but almost all of them deserve it.
