Aging population starts to have an effect

BBC News - A&E: The straw that broke the camel's back

There has been a small, but significant increase in the number of over-65s attending the major A&E units.
As a proportion of overall attendances they now account for 21% of the total - up from 19% four years ago.

This is driven by the ageing population. In numbers terms it amounts to a surprisingly small amount of patients, about 150,000.

However, these people are more likely to need tests and monitoring and, therefore, take longer to see in A&E.

Performance is measured by the proportion of patients who wait longer than four hours to be seen.
In 2008-9, just under 3% did, but by last year this had risen to just over 6% for major A&E units.
The NHS is meant to keep it below 5%.
The growth in older patients is, in effect, the straw that has broken the camel's back.

    -----------------------------------------------

Shouldn't we be grateful that people are living longer? Well apart from them allegedly living in massive houses causing house prices to rise (and I always thought it was down to immigration and tax breaks for landlords doing BTL - bvut there we go).

Socialism is inseparably interwoven with totalitarianism and the abject worship of the state.

No Socialist Government conducting the entire life and industry of the country could afford to allow free, sharp, or violently-worded expressions of public discontent.

Thing is that as a nation we've know full well that this would happen yet nothing has been done.

It was full of codgers when I was in there.

There isn't much that can be done other than culling them. They were promised healthcare and a pension and they paid for it. It seems reasonable they are given it.
While you're waiting, read the free novel we sent you. It's a Spanish story about a guy named 'Manual.'

I'd rather they were helping the aged than sorting out drunken idiots.

I can't be the only one that would be happy to pay more in tax for a better NHS? I know people talk about wasted cash but I mean proper targeted investment.

I was in there not too long ago with the missus Dad, the emergency care was good and organised but once we go to the wards it went downhill. I can't imagine what would have happened to the old fella if it wasn't for the missus taking no tulip. I'm going to be old one day and would like to think that the NHS would be capable of looking after me.

As I'm running LTD company and paying min wage with divs, not sure how I would actually pay the extra tax though

All you need to do is send a cheque...... surprisingly some people actually do.

I think most people need to pay extra tax to make a difference.

It's only going to get worse, probably a lot worse in the medium term.

However there was a story early this week from NICE (the body that makes recommendations on what drugs/treatment the NHS should prescribe) suggesting that treatment should start to be rationed away from older people to younger people where there was likely to be more of a long term cost benefit.

Many modern drugs and treatments are becoming so expensive that I can see the day when rising life expectancy starts to tail off because the artificial methods of extending life through medical treatment will be too costly and we'll all start dying at 65-80 again.
