Thinking 1.6 billion people should all speak with one voice is almost as bad as thinking that 1.6 billion people are terrorists because nine of them are. The vast majority of muslims probably have no idea what happened in Paris, and expecting them to condemn IS is a bit like expecting us to condemn something in South America just because we both happen to be from historically christian countries.
I saw something which was a clip of a CNN interview where the "journalists" asked the french Muslims how come nobody from the Muslim community didn't inform the police of the impending attack. And than after the interview blamed all muslims as being "responsible".

I'm pretty sure that equates to the whole "jewish conspiracy" where every Jew is involved in wagging the dog.

Poll of 1,000 Muslims in Britain for BBC Radio 4 Today

More than two in five (46%) feel that being a Muslim in Britain is difficult due to prejudice against Islam.

Almost all Muslims living in Britain feel a loyalty to the country (95%). Just 6% say they feel a disloyalty.

Nine in ten (93%) British Muslims believe that Muslims in Britain should always obey British laws.

One in four (27%) British Muslims say they have some sympathy for the motives behind the attacks on Charlie Hebdo in Paris.

However, two thirds (68%) say acts of violence against those who publish images of the Prophet can never be justified while a quarter (24%) disagree.

Muslim women are more likely than men to feel unsafe in Britain.

One in nine (11%) British Muslims feel sympathetic towards people who want to fight against western interests while 85% do not.

Half (49%) believe Muslim clerics preaching that violence against the west can be justified are out of touch with mainstream Muslim opinion, while 45% disagree.

And this is the UK, where Muslim and other religions live largely at peace and are arguably better integrated than any other country.

I'm not even an atheist so much as I am an antitheist; I not only maintain that all religions are versions of the same untruth, but I hold that the influence of churches, and the effect of religious belief, is positively harmful. [Christopher Hitchens]

Also in the poll, but apparently not as headline-worthy:

If someone I knew from the Muslim community was planning an act of violence I would report them to the police
          - 94% say this "applies to them"; the breakdown of the figures shows consistent results of 94% - 96% across different genders, age groups, and regions of the UK.

Do you not think 5% is significant?

It's considerably less significant than 95% isn't it?

I fear that a fair few actually have a bit of sympathy with the extremists.

Sure I saw something somewhere that 27% had some sympathy with the Charlie Hebdo ones.

I'm sorry, but Islam needs to sort its own house out first.
No, it does not say they have sympathy with the extremists, it says that they have sympathy with their motives.

Many Irish people I know, including close relatives, had sympathy with the motives of the IRA, but condemned their actions. They are two different things.

If fewer people had sympathy for the IRA, would they have been as effective?
