Oil won't save any socialist, high spending nation from poverty.

Quite. While there are big advantages in avoiding a very unequal society it beats me how intelligent people believe in communism/real socialism, it has never worked and never could. If you go too far in restricting personal wealth the most able will either leave, stop wasting their time trying or further their ambitions within corrupt government.

Talk to communists about the USSR etc. and they will always tell you it wasn't real communism. How many times must idealistic dreams fail apart before some people accept the realities?

Send everyone who wants to go to university.
Oh wait, we've got insufficient graduates of adequate calibre. Fancy that.

    Couldn't agree more.

But I'm vehemently against the idea that both members of the household should be working long hours to support a mortgage payment up to and beyond 50% of income.

The point is the two sides are further apart than they've ever been. That's dangerous.
“We've always defined ourselves by the ability to overcome the impossible. And we count these moments. These moments when we dare to aim higher, to break barriers, to reach for the stars, to make the unknown known. We count these moments as our proudest achievements. But we lost all that. Or perhaps we've just forgotten that we are still pioneers. And we've barely begun. And that our greatest accomplishments cannot be behind us, because our destiny lies above us.”
