Default Trump Nato: EU's Tusk warns president to appreciate allies

Well done Mr Tusk. Wish someone in Westminster had a spine, but being all reptiles looking out for themselves you'll not find one.

US President Donald Trump is set to meet other Nato leaders for potentially fractious talks at a summit in Brussels shortly.

Ahead of his visit, Mr Trump hit out at the EU on trade and at his Nato allies for failing to spend enough on defence.

He was met with a sharp rebuke from European Council President Donald Tusk, who accused the president of criticising Europe "almost daily".

"Dear America, appreciate your allies, after all you don't have that many."

Mr Tusk added that the EU spent more than Russia on defence, and as much as China.

He said the US did not and would not have a better ally than the EU, reminding the president that European troops had also fought and died in Afghanistan after the 11 September 2001 attacks on the US.

“We've always defined ourselves by the ability to overcome the impossible. And we count these moments. These moments when we dare to aim higher, to break barriers, to reach for the stars, to make the unknown known. We count these moments as our proudest achievements. But we lost all that. Or perhaps we've just forgotten that we are still pioneers. And we've barely begun. And that our greatest accomplishments cannot be behind us, because our destiny lies above us.”

A major reason EU spends alot of defense is the UK punches above its weight. Still, no chance of the UK leaving the EU so no worries there.

Germany should be spending nothing on its own defense as it historically uses it to further world domination. It should be paying other countries for defending it.

But then Germany has dropped its goal of world domination via military means. But is now achieving world domination via economic means.

The military in most European countries is a joke, most of the EU capability is based in the UK and quite a lot of that is actually funded by the US.

You may not like the man but he is correct on this subject. Tusk's objection is not actually material and rather childish.

Germany should contribute towards the UK capability.

But what he is saying is true. A great many countries benefit from Nato and should contribute more to their own defence.

Does the UK enough patrol vessels to defend fishing waters - should we call NATO?

The US should pay more than any nation, they want to keep their weapons in the EU to point at Russia. And that's nothing to do with protecting the EU.
