    D Day was 6th June 1944.

So why are we celebrating it today?

Because the airborne units took off on the 5th and started to parachute in just after midnight on 6th.

The landings began on the 6th.

Yeah but by that logic, you could choose the 4th, the day they were loading up, before they took off and landed.

    Date 6 June 1944

    D-Day (military term) - Wikipedia

In the military, D-Day is the day on which a combat attack or operation is to be initiated.

IMO the UK spends too much time looking back at past "glories". And not enough time looking forward.
