Must admit I'm not understanding the hate in this thread. Firstly... it doesn't matter what govt we have in, this is first time this has happened in a generation and more. Govt are just trying their best. Possibly the biggest, slowest organisation we have so it's always going to be a bit of mess. It was for nearly every serious issue we've had and always will be. Every other country is doing the same thing and no one has gotten it right so just blaming Boris is just a waste of breath and time. No one would have gotten this right whatever your political views are. Why keep moaning about it?
If the gov don't act they get called out, if they act too fast people get confused and they get called out. They got stick for lockdown going in, stick for lockdown easing, stick for putting it back in. Do people just like to moan or something? The powers that be can't do right for doing wrong yet I look around and see very few people following the rules or any modicum of common sense. I guess they are quite happy to moan about the govt response as well while they aren't following common sense let alone the rules.
Cases are clearly rising so it's not just testing, it seems pretty real to me. I've seen families broken up and kids end up in hospital and the system so it doesn't just affect people who have caught it directly. Then there is all the jobs and all the other stuff going on. It's tulip.. I totally get that but why are people moaning so much about it? It's going to get worse, how can you argue it won't but we are happy to moan about the efforts to try reduce it.
So I just don't get all the Boris the idiot, govt bulltulip etc etc.. Maybe we should start a thread about what people think we should be doing and see how many useful gems come out of that. Bad enough living with covid around without people incesently moaning about the measures to try and help.
EDIT : Oh hang on.. this is in general.. Doh.. carry on.'CUK forum personality of 2011 - Winner - Yes really!!!!Comment

Curbing our freedoms and private company acquisitions today Argentina style to full socialist marxist utopia with labour camps up and down the country by Spring.
But fret not, with cheese exports to Japan and fish imports from the Faroe Islands when we've more fish than we can shake a stick at - yes, vastly improved."Never argue with stupid people, they will drag you down to their level and beat you with experience". Mark TwainComment

Other than that, I'd largely agree with you. There have been mistakes along the way, but most governments are going to be tripped up by an event like this. However:
The current PM is not the man for this job. He's not a details man, and he's surrounded himself with mediocrities in the Cabinet. Also, his instincts run counter to sensible public health measures. Over the summer he has been telling people they should go back into work if they can. The sensible message would be to only go into work if you have to.Comment
