    I got the impression that the novices, numpties and good ones alike, were just not getting any good leadership from the chief; they were out of their depth in a falling market, being ‘led’ by someone whose ego has been nurtured by a market that seemed only ever to go up, and who really didn’t know what to do about it either, except for bollocking them when they made mistakes.

    It gave me more of an insight into the kind of jumped up egomaniacs that manage the people who manage my money than into the job of a trader. But then having contracted at a bank and a couple of insurance firms, I knew about that anyway.

      I watched this, I was amazed at the very low number of trades they were making.
      It seems like they should have been sent into a casino and forced to bet, it would have got them used to concept of risk and probability.

      As for them not being trained properly by the cheif, i thought that was the whole point, they were only going to be trained in the technicalities of trading, i.e. how to sell and buy shares, how to use the trading computers and a basic rundown of how to read the information

        Well fair enough, but then I'd like to see some comparison of how badly (or well) they did as opposed to the majority of professional traders.

          Perhaps the idea of the program is to try and add a certain mystique to the "trading game" and to try and convince the average "joe on the street" that it isn't easy...

            And there was me thinking they just want to provide entertainment! Dont ever suggest that TV should be used to educate people again!

              One quote that tickled me, from BP's brother coincidentally;

              "I'm very competitive. Sometimes I race my girlfriend to see who can get dressed quickest."

              That's the Paras for you....

                    I agree entirely.

                    They couldn't have got a worse match for the job requirements if they'd stood on the street corner and selected the first 10 people (matching their PC profile) that walked past.

                    If ever they was compelling proof that using an interview process for establishing people's "soft" skills [1] was completely F-ing useless, then this is it.

                    [1] All it does is select the people who are good at "dramatizing" in the right way.

                      Is he the one that traded in HSBC?

                      He seemed to be the only one of the bunch that had any sort of feel for the actual dynamics of trading, though his analysis of the market was completely wrong.

                      All the other just didn't have the "balls" to be a trader, IMHO.
