So what exactly are Lib Dems trying achieve here? If there is a snap election they will get wiped out just for trying to hold the country to ransom.

Its simple. If they are okay with Cnservative coalition just put the terms on the table. Take it or leave it.

Why keep meeting both Lab and Cons ?
Because Gordon is getting more and more desperate. He's offering the Lib-Dems more and more of what he can't deliver just to hold onto the PM role.

I tell you, he'll offer them everything they want, only one non-negotiable: Gordon Brown gets to stay in #10.
Insanity: repeating the same actions, but expecting different results.

The most enjoyable aspect to all these ponderous machinations between Cameron and Clegg is the fact that it must be driving Gordon Brown absolutely insane.
Now he knows how WE feel. Kept out of the loop, with the only inevitable certainty being that you are going to get shafted at some stage.

I agree that Scottish independence would give an big electoral advantage to the Conservatives in England, and since they can't get any support in Scotland they may go down this route. Yet they (as indeed are all the major parties) are still keen to keep Scotland in the union, which makes me suspect Scotland is still of great value to the United Kingdom.
Maybe whisky is the one export we can rely on?

It will be interesting to see what happens.

It is quite possible that this is just a little brinkmanship from the Libdems to get a better deal out of the Tories, like a contractor telling an agent that they are not going to sign a contract in order to get a better rate.

But at the same time it does look like Mandelson is working hard on this so he must think they have a chance and he is no mug.
