    Default Good beginners books?

    Hi,

I am in the process of wanting to move into contracting within the next 6 months and have been looking for some bedtime/on the train reading. Can anybody recommend any good reads to prepare me for the future? Not looking for any specific areas, just the whole picture. Any advice is very welcome! Amazon seem to have a few popular ones, however the published date seems to be a few years ago.

    Thanks for the help.

Just the whole picture, eh? Not asking for much, are you??

Here are a few to get you going - I'm not giving new publications because I don't buy this kind of stuff anymore - but the advice in them is still solid and relevant.

Complete Idiot s Guide to Consulting (Paperback)

    Finance on a Beermat (Paperback)

https://www.contractoruk.com/forums/Persuasion: The Art of Influencing People (Paperback)

Dealing with People You Can't Stand (Paperback)

    Hi Meraff,
you could do a lot worse than sticking around here and asking direct questions. Forums that cater to specific niches can be a great place to pick up accurate info fast!

I had never thought of looking to buy a book on the subject, so thanks for sharing the list!

I do plan on hanging around here. These are more for when I don't have access to the internet.

A friend of mine speaks highly of The Bluffer's Guide to Consultancy:

"Being a consultant means being an expert in a field which you have yourself invented, namely that of telling people who have been doing a job for years, that you know how to do that job better."

Actually there is a book called something like 'the career programmer' or 'Guerrilla Guide to programming' that and Joel's stuff will help even if you're not a programmer or in any way techie, like if you're a PM.

Wonder why CUK hasnt come out with a book yet?

I guess you mean this one The Career Programmer: Guerilla Tactics for an Imperfect World 2nd Edition Expert's Voice: Amazon.co.uk: Christopher Duncan: Books - looks good from the reviews.
